Three Taiwanese politicians combine politics and anime to create an unforgettable Spy x Family Cosplay.
Since the Forgers is a slightly odd family, it’s natural that the family cosplayers would-be politicians.
Three Spy x Familycosplayers who have been making rounds on TikTok and Facebook for their portrayal of Loid, Yor, and Anya are discovered to be Taiwanese political figures on Reddit. According to a post on Reddit, Tseng Wenhseuh is cosplaying Loid. Lai Pin Yu is Yor’s cosplayer, and Huang Jie plays Anya. In the image, each character has their respective ‘weapon’ of choice The Loid cosplayer is holding a newspaper as they are spies who collect information, the Yor cosplayer is holding her gold needles and Anya’s cosplayer is wearing a magnifying glass. Incredibly, though Loid and Yor are posing as fake couples in the show, Tseng and Lai are real-life partners.

Tseng is Miaoli County Councilor. He has helped expose corruption. In 2020, he turned independent, leaving the New Power Party, after leaks revealed that former chairman Huang Guo-chang criticized Tseng’s capabilities and claimed that he wouldn’t be successful in winning the party on his own. Tseng stated that he could not stay in the NPP as the ideals of the party had changed significantly.
Lai, an active part of the Democratic Progressive Party, is famous for her support of the anime and cosplay industries. In 2014, the police arrested Lai when she protested during the Sunflower Student Movement, which was against the trade pact between the People’s Republic of China and Taiwan since many believed that it could create Taiwan more susceptible to China’s political influence. Lai, in addition to Yor from Neon Genesis Evangelion has also cosplayed Asuka Langley Soryu from Sailor Moon and Asuka Langley Soryu from Neon Genesis Evangelion.

As Tseng, Huang was a former member of the NPP. Huang is currently the Kaohsiung City councilor. The city councilor became famous for her eyes rolling in a viral clip when Han Kuo Yu, Kaohsiung’s Mayor, Kaohsiung was unable to provide any information about his plan to establish a free economic zone in Kaohsiung. During Hong Kong’s Umbrella Movement in 2014, she provided resources like safety equipment to the protestors.
Spy x family tackles politics with clever storytelling
Spy x Family, produced by Wit Studio & CloverWorks takes place amid an uneasy peace agreement between Westalis & Ostania. In the course of Operation Strix, a mission that aims to prevent war from breaking out, super spy Twilight goes undercover in the role of Lord Forger and then marries Yor and adopts four-year-old Anya. Loid Forger and Yor each have their motives behind their decision to accept the lie, but they have grown to love their “fake family”.
